Antiquities shopping and art galleries in Malacca

There are several very good shops dealing in antiquites in Malacca, and a smattering of art galleries. All are centered in two streets in Chinatown, Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, and Jalan Hang Jebat (Jonkers Street), which runs parallel to it. Many of the antiquities have been imported from China (recently, or decades ago, for use in Baba-Nyonya houses). Especially compelling are the old Nyonya washstands.

Of all the art galleries we sampled, we felt only Aoyama had a breadth of work interesting enough to report.

Our favorite antiquities shops include:

Nyonya Washstand Malacca Art Store 110 Jalan Hang Jebat Tel: 06-282-2977 GPS: N02°11.820’, E102°14.767’ Owner “Heng” Chwee has assembled a very good collection of carved panels, signs, and other interesting furniture items.

Syarikat Abdul 29 Jalan Hang Jebat Tel: 06-282-3633 GPS: N02°11.746’, E102°14.902’ The specialty here are wonderful old interior hanging gas lamps, converted to electricity. Manager Haris, and clerk Masirah are engaging, and honest in describing the differences between old pieces and newer replicas.

Xing-era scholars’s shop sign World of Antique 36-38 Jalan Hang Jebat Tel: 06-284-0128 GPS: N02°11.755’, E102°14.865’ Very good items, including wonderful carved Chinese beds, on two storeys.

Malaqa House Museum 70 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock Tel: 06-281-4770 GPS: N02°11.732’, E102°14.777’ Located in a magnificent old house, this establishment’s specialty is old furniture, and doubles as an exhibition space for the paintings of its owner.

Syarikat Abdul 93 Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock Tel: 06-282-4636 GPS: N02°11.750’, E102°14.754’ This, the sister shop of that of the same name around the corner on Jalan Hang Jebat street, is twice as big, with good pieces of furniture, carved panels, and just about everything else. There’s more upstairs, and much of what’s on display is of good quality.
